What Is Graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice - essentially one atom thick. First isolated in 2004 by researchers Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester (for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010), graphene is considered one of the most remarkable materials ever discovered.
At just one atom thick, graphene is:
- The thinnest material known to science
- Approximately 200 times stronger than steel by weight
- An exceptional conductor of both electricity and heat
- Highly flexible and optically transparent
- Biologically inert in many forms (non-reactive with human tissue)
Graphene’s Thermal Properties
Graphene has one of the highest known thermal conductivity values of any material - approximately 3,000–5,000 W/m·K, compared to copper at ~400 W/m·K. This means graphene can distribute heat extremely rapidly and evenly across a surface. In wellness textiles, this property allows body heat to be absorbed, redistributed, and emitted in the far infrared spectrum more effectively than standard fabrics.
Graphene in Wellness and Textile Applications
Graphene-infused textiles and materials represent a growing segment of functional wellness products. Researchers and manufacturers have explored graphene in applications including:
- Thermal regulation in sports and wellness garments
- Antibacterial properties - graphene's sharp edges are structurally disruptive to bacterial cell membranes
- Anti-static and electromagnetic shielding applications
- Enhanced far infrared emission when combined with bioceramic materials
Graphene at WHIEDA Health
WHIEDA Health incorporates graphene-enhanced materials in selected products to improve thermal distribution and far infrared emission efficiency. When combined with bioceramic powders, graphene helps ensure that body heat is converted and re-emitted as therapeutic far infrared energy more evenly and consistently than traditional materials alone.
WHIEDA Health products are wellness products, not medical devices. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
