Far Infrared Technology

What Is Far Infrared Radiation?

Far infrared (FIR) radiation is a segment of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 5.6 to 1000 micrometers. Unlike near infrared or visible light, far infrared waves are invisible to the naked eye but are felt as gentle, penetrating warmth. The human body naturally emits and absorbs far infrared energy - it is the same type of radiant heat produced by the sun that makes you feel warm without heating the surrounding air.

How Far Infrared Works in the Body

Far infrared waves penetrate the skin to a depth of approximately 2–7 centimeters, reaching deep tissues, muscles, and even bone. This deep penetration causes water molecules within cells to resonate and vibrate, generating heat from within the tissue rather than on the surface - a process called resonant absorption.

The primary biological effects of far infrared exposure include:

  • Improved microcirculation - dilation of capillaries increases blood flow to tissues
  • Enhanced cellular metabolism - improved oxygen and nutrient delivery to cells
  • Muscle relaxation - heat reduces tension in smooth and skeletal muscle tissue
  • Lymphatic stimulation - supports natural detoxification pathways
  • Pain modulation - thermal effect reduces nerve sensitivity to pain signals

Far Infrared and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has used heat therapy for thousands of years through moxibustion - the application of heat near acupuncture points to warm meridian channels and stimulate the flow of Qi. Modern far infrared technology delivers targeted deep heat as a science-informed parallel to this ancient practice.

Materials That Emit Far Infrared

Certain materials absorb body heat and re-emit it as far infrared radiation in the 6–14 micrometer range - the range most biologically active for the human body:

  • Bioceramic powders - mineral ceramics embedded in textiles or devices
  • Tourmaline - a crystalline mineral that emits both FIR and negative ions
  • Graphene - a carbon nanomaterial with exceptional thermal conductivity

Far Infrared at WHIEDA Health

WHIEDA Health incorporates far infrared-emitting bioceramic materials into selected wellness textiles, insoles, and wearable devices - delivering consistent, low-level thermal support during everyday use.

WHIEDA Health products are wellness products, not medical devices. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
